God’s ‘Kingdom Time’ That Finally Brings Laughter

Scripture: Genesis 21:1-2 (Background: Chapters 18-20)

The word we need to focus on today is ‘Timing.’

We often complain like this: "God, how much longer? When on earth will it happen?" But God’s time is different from ours. He is the One who rules and oversees the time of the entire universe.

Look at Abraham and Sarah in today’s text. In Genesis 18, God visits them and says, "By this time next year, you will have a son." How did Sarah react then? She laughed. She didn’t laugh out of joy. She laughed because it was "absurd."Biologically, it was over. Her cycle had stopped, and her husband was old. Her laughter was a cynical laughter. It meant, "God, You must be joking. Look at my reality."

But friends, do you know what lies between the ‘Promise’ of chapter 18 and the ‘Fulfillment’ of chapter 21? A terrible ‘Mess’ called chapters 19 and 20 is sandwiched in between.

Look at chapter 19. Sodom and Gomorrah were burned to ashes. The world was judged and crumbling down. Chapter 20 is even worse. Abraham, the so-called father of faith, right before having the promised son, almost handed his wife over to another man just to save his own neck. He was cowardly, and he failed.

Let’s think with common sense. In this situation, God should have voided the contract. "Abraham, looking at how you act, you are disqualified. The deal is off!" This is the human way.

But God’s way—the Kingdom Way—is different. Look at Genesis 21:1. The Bible declares with great weight: "Now the Lord was gracious to Sarah as he had said, and the Lord did for Sarah what he had promised."

Despite Abraham’s mistake, despite Sarah’s cynical laughter, and despite the corruption of Sodom! God acted ‘as He had said.’ What does this mean? God’s blessing does not depend on your Performance, but on God’s Covenant.

He doesn’t bless you because you are perfect. He keeps His promise because He made it on His own name. Even when Abraham made the mistake of giving his wife away, God appeared in Abimelech’s dream that very night to sort out the situation. Why? Because on God’s schedule, ‘Isaac’ had to be born.

Beloved saints, today in Genesis 21, Isaac was born. What is the meaning of ‘Isaac’? It is ‘Laughter.’ In chapter 18, Sarah laughed in mockery, saying, "No way." But in chapter 21, Sarah confesses, "God has brought me laughter, and everyone who hears about this will laugh with me."

God is the One who turns your ‘laughter of cynicism’ into a ‘laughter of wonder.’

Is your situation, your relationship, or your finances crumbling down like Sodom right now? Or are you blaming yourself for making a foolish mistake like Abraham in chapter 20? It’s okay. Your environmental difficulties or your mistakes are not greater than God’s promise. Your weakness cannot cancel out God’s power.

Is anything too hard for the Lord? Your calendar might say it’s over, but on God’s Kingdom Calendar, there is an “Appointed Time.” When that time comes, God will surely visit you. And instead of sighs, He will make joyful laughter burst from your lips, saying, "God did it!"

Hold on to that faithful God today, the God who does exactly as He said. Do not look at the situation; hold on to the promise. God is never late.
