Is Your Faith Alive?
What is the biggest tragedy in Christianity today? It is not that the world attacks the church. It is that the church looks exactly like the world. We say, "I believe in Jesus," but our daily lives, our words, and our relationships often don't match that confession. The book of James cuts right to the heart of this problem. The question James asks is this: "Is your faith just an idea in your head, or is it a reality that moves you?"
Pain Removes the Mask (Chapter 1)
In chapter 1, James talks about "trials." Why? Because when life is peaceful, anyone can look like a good believer. But when a crisis comes and things don't go our way, our real self comes out. James says, "Do not merely listen to the word, but do what it says." The Bible is like a mirror. If you look in a mirror and see dirt on your face, you should wash it off. But we often see the dirt and just walk away. We are satisfied with just listening, but we don't change. James calls this fooling yourself. Suffering is a test. It reveals if we are people who just listen to God, or people who actually live by His word through the pain.
Relationships are the Report Card of Faith (Chapter 2)
So, how do I know if my faith is alive? Chapter 2 gives us a shocking standard: How we treat people. If a rich man with gold rings comes into the church, and a poor man in dirty clothes comes in, does our attitude change? If it does, James says clearly, "Your faith is fake." Why does this matter? Because discriminating against people shows that we worship worldly values—like money and power—more than we worship God. "Faith without action is dead." This doesn't just mean "be a nice person." It means if something is alive, it must move. Just as a body without breath is a corpse, faith without the labor of love is just a decoration.
The Tongue is the Captain of Life (Chapter 3)
Finally, chapter 3 talks about our words. The tongue is the smallest part of the body, but like a ship's rudder, it steers our whole life. With the same mouth, we praise God, and then turn around and curse our brothers and sisters. James says this is impossible. Salt water cannot produce fresh water. If our words are toxic, it means our hearts are sick. True wisdom—real faith—is not about being smart. It is about being pure, peace-loving, and gentle. Your spiritual level is proven not by how well you pray, but by the temperature of your words when you are angry.
Ask for Wisdom from Above
The message of James is not to condemn you by saying, "You don't have works, so you aren't saved." Instead, it is an invitation: "Your salvation is so great and costly, so why do you live such a small life?" We cannot live this way on our own. That is why we need Jesus Christ, the true "Wisdom from above." Jesus obeyed God even in suffering. He loved the lowest people without discrimination. On the cross, He spoke forgiveness instead of curses. If His life is truly inside us, we will change. Today, I hope you prove your faith not just with your lips, but with your hands, your feet, and your warm words.
