No Longer Remembered

Jeremiah 31:20, 33-34; 50:18-20

A parent gets a single text message from a child who has been silent for years. "Hope you're well." That's all it says. And that one short line breaks the parent's heart open — not from anger, but from longing.

Ephraim had worshipped idols. He had turned his back and walked away. And yet God says, "Is Ephraim my dear son... For as often as I speak against him, I do remember him still. Therefore my heart yearns for him" (Jer 31:20). The Hebrew word behind "yearns" describes a physical churning — the kind of longing your whole body feels. What makes this so striking is the timing. Ephraim had not yet repented. God's heart was already moving before the condition was met.

We usually assume God's love is a response to how good we've been. But the text says the opposite. God's love doesn't flow from our faithfulness — it flows from His.

But it doesn't stop there. Verses 33-34 promise a new covenant: "I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts." The old covenant was carved on stone tablets — external. The new covenant is written on the heart, because our real problem was never a lack of information. It was a corrupted heart. Give us better rules and we'll still fail, because the heart hasn't changed. So God doesn't promise new rules. He promises a new heart.

And in chapter 50, the same God who judged Israel now judges Babylon and brings Israel home. "Iniquity shall be sought in Israel, and there shall be none." Not because the sin never happened. But because it will no longer be held against them.

Every one of these promises was still future in Jeremiah's day. But Hebrews tells us the cross of Christ has already fulfilled this covenant. The law written on the heart — that's the Spirit. The sin no longer remembered — that's the cross. Already accomplished.

Ephraim wasn't worthy either. And still, God's heart churned for him first. God's heart toward you this morning is no different. Come now — not after you've met every condition, but exactly as you are.
